The Vatican Museums attract more than six million visitors a year. To enjoy the masterpieces without elbowing your way through crowds, timing is everything. Weekdays are not equal - Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings see fewer tourists, while Saturdays and Sundays are the busiest. High season (April-October) brings warm weather and huge lines; low season (November-March, excluding Christmas) is cooler and more relaxed.
Insider tips
- Early bird gets the Sistine Chapel: Arrive around 8-9 am for the first entry and you’ll see the galleries and Michelangelo’s ceiling before tour groups flood in.
- Afternoons in peak season: If you can’t get an early ticket, aim for mid-afternoon; the midday rush has faded and you still have time to linger.
- Winter rewards: In the low season the museums feel almost intimate; bring a jacket and enjoy the art without sweating.
For the most relaxed visit, choose the earliest entry you can comfortably make. If you care about the art, a small guided visit is usually worth it because the route through the museums is long and easy to misread.
