Palatine Hill - Birthplace of Rome

Palatine Hill mixes Rome’s origin story, imperial palaces, gardens, and some of the best views over the Forum.

Legend says Romulus founded Rome on the Palatine. Archaeologists confirm that humans lived here as early as the 10th century BC. The hill rises above the Forum and Circus Maximus, offering sweeping views and a tranquil escape from the city below. Highlights include:

  • House of Augustus and House of Livia: Fresco-decorated residences of Rome’s first emperor and his wife.
  • Domus Flavia and Domus Augustana: Palatial complexes built by Emperor Domitian, complete with peristyles and private stadium.
  • Farnese Gardens: Renaissance terraces with manicured hedges and fountains.
  • Parkland and birdlife: Today the hill is dotted with umbrella pines and manicured gardens where parakeets and other birds perch on the ruins.
Come for the views, but stay for the layers: early settlement, imperial houses, Renaissance gardens, and quiet paths above the Forum.
