Nothing prepares you for the view from the top of St Peter’s Basilica. The domed roof is accessible but requires effort: there are 551 steps to the summit; the elevator takes you only to the terrace, leaving 320 steep, narrow steps to climb. Visits last about an hour. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) and leave large bags behind - only small bags are permitted.
How to conquer the dome
- Book a timed entrance: Tickets include access to the basilica and a digital audio guide.
- Take your time: The climb can be claustrophobic; take breaks on the terrace to admire the Vatican Gardens and Rome’s skyline.
- Reward yourself: At the top, the 360-degree panorama spans St Peter’s Square, the Tiber and distant hills.
Only climb the dome if tight stairs and height are comfortable for you. The terrace is a good pause point before the final narrow section.
