The Galleria Borghese houses one of Rome’s richest art collections, but its small size means visitor numbers are strictly capped. Tickets cost €16 plus a €2 reservation fee, and advance booking is mandatory. Even free-entry days require a paid reservation. Each visitor may buy only five tickets, and the gallery releases extra tickets on the first Sunday of the month 10 days in advance. Opening hours are Tuesday-Sunday 9:00-19:00, with last entry at 17:45, and visits are limited to two-hour time slots. Only about 180 guests enter per hour; 13 last-minute tickets are sold on site at the 20th minute of each hour.
Booking strategy
- Plan ahead: Reserve tickets online weeks before. If you miss out, arrive early to queue for the handful of last-minute spots.
- Choose your time: Mid-morning slots offer the best light for Caravaggio paintings; late afternoon tends to be quieter.
- Understand policies: Even free days need a paid reservation; ID may be checked.
Do not treat the Borghese like a walk-up museum. Pick your slot early, arrive with time to spare, and plan the rest of Villa Borghese around it.
