Rome is the Eternal City and here you walk through the Eternal Entrance!
★★★★☆
It has been nice going back to places I visited with my HS students when working. When there with my students, we raced through this area and I remember telling myself to come back. A good way to experience the Piazza is to enter through the gate. This gate is called "Porto del Popolo". But, historically, it was known as "Porto Flaminia." Flaminia is the name of the road that lead to the gate. (from North) As you enter, you will see the 2 churches, fountain and an ancient Egyptian Flaminio Obelisk. The Obelisk is one of the oldest in Rome. It was brought to Rome by Emperor Augustus. It was originally placed in Circus Maximus before being moved here. Behind the Obelisk are the twin churches, Santa Maria Montesanto (left) and Santa Maria dei Miracoli (right). The origin of the Churches dates back to the 17th century. My favorite church in all of Rome is Santa Maria Montesanto, not because of beauty or architecture, because of its name. It is often called the "Church of the Artists." The church has bonded with art and culture. Walking in toward the center you will see on your left is the church,Santa Maria del Popolo, which is a jewel of Renaissance Architecture built in the 15th century. Inside the Capilla Cesari there are 2 paintings by Caravaggio, The Crucifixion of St Peter and The Conversion of the St Paul. To enter the twin churches and Santa Maria is free. Enjoy your visit in a Piazza that has history for 28 Centuries of time!
