Piazza di Spagna, 00187 Rome Italy
Located in the heart of Rome, this vibrant and elegant square is surrounded by 18th-century buildings augmented by the colorful flowers that adorn the Spanish Steps. The elegant steps by Francesco de Sanctis (1723-1726) consist of twelve flights of varying width, which descend to the scenic Franciscan Church of Trinita dei Monti.

Warning for tourists – Spanish Steps / Piazza di Spagna area
★★☆☆☆
I experienced a theft incident in this area during daytime while it was very crowded with tourists. My bag was taken by pickpocketing within a busy crowd near the Spanish Steps. These incidents appear to be carried out very quickly and professionally, and visitors may not notice until it is too late. Important points for travelers: Keep bags and valuables in front and fully secured at all times Be especially cautious in crowded areas and near street performers or distractions Do not assume visibility means safety – theft here can happen in seconds I strongly recommend being extremely alert in this area, especially during peak tourist hours.

A must see
★★★★★
We loved that the local police keep people from sitting down on the steps It means you can see and photograph them as you are meant to see them. We walked up and down, the steps are very slippery so take your time. Also very close to a Metro station which is very handy to see and also hop on and off the Metro

Pretty with the flowers and buildings but not worth going out of your way
★★★★☆
With the planters of flowers leading to the church and old buildings on the sides, it looks picturesque. The 135 steps had some landings along the way. Fortunately, in spite of the tourists, there was some room to walk on the stairs although it would be nicer if people moved to the side instead of just stopping and standing on the stairs or in the middle of a landing. Other than saying you climbed the steps, I wasn't sure of the big attraction. The view from the top was okay but not a panoramic view of the city. Go to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Vittoriano monument for a fantastic view of Rome. Much higher climb but it is also offers a free view from the balconies including the Colosseum.
