Spanish Steps Rules - Respect This Icon

The Spanish Steps are beautiful, busy, and protected. Know the rules before you stop for photos.
Spanish Steps with flowers

The Spanish Steps are an Instagram dream, especially during spring when flowers cascade down the 135 steps. But since 2019, sitting on the staircase is banned. Violators risk fines of €250 (up to €400 if food or drink damages the marble). The ban followed a €1.5 million restoration funded by jeweler Bulgari and is enforced by officers armed with whistles.

What you need to know

  • Keep moving: Take your photos quickly but don’t sit or picnic.
  • No rolling suitcases: Dragging luggage down the steps is also prohibited to protect the monument.
  • Enjoy nearby: Relax in Piazza di Spagna below or climb to the Trinità dei Monti church above.
Take the photo, keep moving, and enjoy Piazza di Spagna or the church above when you want to linger. The steps themselves are no longer a place to sit.
