Trastevere

We visited Trastevere and we had a lovely evening the first time around. It's a pretty and unspoilt area and is much more authentic. I'd give a 5 star but we were misled a bit on our 2nd visit of the holiday. On the first visit we took the advice of our hotel reception and took a cab to San Maria Square, where we walked through the lovely little streets lined with true Italian restaurants. On the next visit we saw down by the river, a long row of rooftops and what looked like lovely little tavernas. As we got closer we could see some restaurants but mixed in there were some stalls and table football games, it was apparent it was more like a fairground area but not wanting to appear rude we thought we would give one of the restaurants ( Scalo Trastevere) a try. My advice, DON'T EAT HERE. The food was grim and the waitress spilt red wine all over my sons shirt. We got no apology just a replacement glass of wine and no replacement pizza despite the one we orderd swimming in wine. Oh and then the bill and they had the cheek to add service. No manager came to help and then I spotted the kitchen staff smoking over the food. There were lots of eateries on this run but this one was particularly bad. Stick to the old part of Trastevere and it's lovely. Don't be pulled by the river location. I got bitten to pieces too.

I visited Trastevere with a friend this February, and it quickly became one of our favorite areas in Rome. We spent a relaxed afternoon wandering through the narrow streets, stopping at small cafés and browsing local shops. The neighborhood feels very authentic, with colorful buildings, ivy-covered walls, and lively little squares that are perfect for taking photos. It was busy but never felt too crowded, even on the weekend. We stayed for around three hours and ended up having dinner there before heading back. If you enjoy walking without a fixed plan, Trastevere is the perfect place to slow down and simply enjoy the atmosphere.
