Overrated. The first thing I smelled when I entered the area of Trastevere was urine. I thought it a one-off until I realized the whole place smells like urine. Wanted to take pictures of the buildings, but everything was spray painted (not even with good urban art) and surrounded by litter and dog feces. Watch where you walk. The thought of waiting in the crowds of drunk tourists to eat outside was not desirable at all.
There are SO many better areas of Rome. If you love urban decay and come from countries where this is normal this may not be as shocking as it was to me. There are some nice churches and things which will provide brief moments of beauty and relief from the streets/smells of Trastevere.
If you are young, love to drink, and want to appear punk/edgy then this will provide a great dystopian backdrop for your photos.

Beautiful off the beaten path neighborhood of Rome. Feels “old world.” Very charming, quaint and delicious food. A nice break from the hustle and bustle of Rome and wow what a beautiful view of the Tiber River.
