No trip to Rome is complete without tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain. Legend says a single coin ensures your return to Rome; two coins help you find love; three coins mean marriage. The ritual has pagan roots but today it’s pure romance. Over €3,000 worth of coins are collected every day - the money is donated to Caritas, a Catholic charity that funds social programs.
How to do it right
- Face away from the fountain.
- Use your right hand to toss over your left shoulder.
- Don’t use copper coins: Locals believe it’s bad luck.
Go early, late, or as part of an evening walk. The fountain is still beautiful in a crowd, but it is far better when you are not fighting for space.
