Trevi Fountain Traditions - Make Your Wish

The Trevi coin toss is touristy for a reason. Here is the tradition, the best timing, and how to enjoy it without the crush.
Trevi Fountain coin toss

No trip to Rome is complete without tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain. Legend says a single coin ensures your return to Rome; two coins help you find love; three coins mean marriage. The ritual has pagan roots but today it’s pure romance. Over €3,000 worth of coins are collected every day - the money is donated to Caritas, a Catholic charity that funds social programs.

How to do it right

  1. Face away from the fountain.
  2. Use your right hand to toss over your left shoulder.
  3. Don’t use copper coins: Locals believe it’s bad luck.
Go early, late, or as part of an evening walk. The fountain is still beautiful in a crowd, but it is far better when you are not fighting for space.
