Trevi Fountain

Second time in Rome, came here in 2014, not very crowded, it was May. Came this time in June, last week. It was still packed at 10 PM, it was much cooler out without the sun, but we did get to the edge of the fountain to take pictures, but not as crowded during the day. Plus if you go in the day up to 7 PM, you have to pay a 2 Euro fee. BTW... no more throwing coins in the fountain. Still a great site to see.

Visited here in the afternoon of July-2, 2026. Very crowded and seperate ticketed entry charging ~1 or ~2 euros to go close in front of the fountain for pictures avoiding the crowds. The fountain itself is beautifully sculptured with horses being handled by men & the fountain is at the junction of three roads (tre vie),marking the terminal point of the "modern" Acqua Vergine—the revived Aqua Virgo, one of the aqueducts that supplied water to ancient Rome.

Even late at night, the crowd was unbearable. Its gotten far too popular over the years, and they've even started selling tickets to be able to approach it. This was the most "jam packed" site on our visit to Rome, even though we visited at 11PM. It's always been popular with tourists, but we couldn't even get close to it. It's a beautiful fountain, but for the time and effort there's so many other beautiful fountains to visit in Rome! On my first visit to Rome 25 years ago, we were able to stroll over to the fountain after dinner with our Italian relatives and get a photo with everyone in it, directly in front of the fountain. On this visit, my partner and I stood at the top of the stairs and could barely get a selfie with it in the background. It reminded me of Times Square. There for a photo, with the surrounding streets all packed with tourist traps and crowds. I recommend either only visiting it in the off season or just breezing past it. Visit the Piazza Navona instead.

There are fountains, and then there is the Trevi. It doesn’t just sit in a piazza; it dominates it. The pure scale of the Baroque carvings against the brilliant blue water is absolutely breathtaking. Take it all in! Pro tip: Visit at dawn or past midnight to skip the crowds and hear the roar of the water echoing off the cobblestones. Don't forget your coin! Tradition says throwing one coin over your left shoulder with your right hand guarantees a return trip to Rome. This adds up to roughly €3,000 a day, which is entirely collected and donated to local charities they say!
